As leaders, we all want to stay relevant. More accurately, we all fear irrelevancy. It is almost as if irrelevancy robs us of purpose or our meaning of life.

Rick Warren recently addressed this important topic in a TEDx talk.

Here are some of Rick’s remarks that I thought is worth chewing on:

  • What causes irrelevancy? When the speed of change around an organisation is faster than the speed of change within the organisation, the organisation becomes irrelevant.
  • Rick’s conclusion: Relevance is a choice. If you do not purposefully choose to stay relevant, you wil become irrelevant.
  • If you choose to stay relevant, you will have to learn 3 behaviors. These 3 actions are the D.N.A. of relevancy:
  1. D: Develop a lab mentality. Do not be afraid to experiment. Remember most experiments fail most of the time.
  2. N: Never stop learning. If you stop learning, you stop leading.
  3. A: Acknowledge the grief. There is no growth, without change. There is no change without loss. There is no loss without pain. There is no pain without grief. A lot of people who you think are oppositional, are actually grieving. Grief is a good thing. It’s the way we get through the transition.
  • Do not try to be in style. Because whatever is in style, goes out of style. If you tie your identity to the spirit of the age, you are soon going to be a widow. The only way to be eternally relevant, is to be timeless.
  • Vision is not the ability to foretell the future. Vision is the ability to see opportunity in the present and jump on it.
